What size of hairdressing scissors should you choose? From 5.0″ to 8.0″

Size is the first criterion when choosing scissors — before the series, before the steel. It is measured in inches (1″ = 2.54 cm), from the blade tip to the end of the longest ring. The Togiya catalogue runs from 5.0″ to 8.0″.

The palm rule

Lay the closed scissors on your palm: the blade should stop around the last knuckle of the middle finger. That is the classic starting point — a slim hand leans towards 5.0″–5.5″, a broad hand towards 6.0″ and above. But technique matters as much as morphology.

Choosing by technique

• 5.0″ – 5.5″: the Swiss army knife of precision work. Fine scissor-over-comb, detailing, outlines, point cutting. The most common size in ladies' salons.
• 6.0″ – 6.5″: more blade length per closure: fast scissor-over-comb, slide cutting, light barbering. A good compromise if you want only one pair.
• 7.0″ – 8.0″: the barbering and academy sizes: high-speed scissor-over-comb, continuous work over the comb. Length buys output, at the cost of a little agility in detail.

Right-handed, left-handed: don't cheat

A left-hander working with right-handed scissors reverses the natural pressure of the rings: the edges push apart instead of crossing, and the cut chews.
