TOT-40

The TOT-40 is a thinning shear from the Talent Series range, forged by the Togiya manufacture. 40-tooth thinning scissors, 3D handle, dial adjustment screw.

A thinning shear does not replace a cutting pair — it completes it. Work on dry hair, at the end of the cut, to remove weight without touching the line. Used on wet hair, the dry result will always be thinner than intended.

With its 40 fine teeth, this shear removes a small proportion of hair at each closing: it blends demarcations and adds texture without thinning out. The finishing tool par excellence, including on fine hair where mistakes are unforgiving.

The blade

The blade is ground and then hand-sharpened in Inuyama, following Togiya's own geometry: a consistent edge along the full length, checked piece by piece before dispatch.

In the hand

The 3D handle adds a tilt in all three planes: the ring comes to the thumb rather than the reverse. The grip stays relaxed, even through long cuts. The knurled screw adjusts by hand, mid-cut if needed: half a turn is enough to firm up or loosen the closing.

Forged in Inuyama

The Talent Series range comes out of the Togiya manufacture, which controls its whole chain: steel selection, forging, hardening, grinding, then hand sharpening and assembly. That end-to-end control explains the value of Togiya's “Made in Japan”.

Care and lifespan

Wipe the blades at the end of each day, add a drop of oil on the screw and edge, store the pair in its case. Once a year, hand it to a sharpener trained on Japanese blades — never to a standard grinding wheel, which would destroy the convex geometry in a single pass.
